I visited this hotel for one week, it was a couple of years ago so it may be different now but the NOISE was overwhelming. The sound of constant building works and the noisy road meant that we rarely ventured out onto the balcony. When we visited we didn't have children (thankfully) as the balcony was so high it made me quite nervous and this wasn't helped by the fact some of the balcony wall wasn't secured! (but the view was spectacular).
The staff were lovely and very helpful, and the bar was lively with some entertainment. The pool looked like it had seen better days and the water was murky.
It was a 15 minute walk down to the lovely centre of Funchal which was busy with some good shopping.
The food at the hotel was fairly awful, not a very good selection and usually cooked for too long and cold.
Would I go again? No, but it was an experience.
